They returned to “an” upper room. We believe it to be the same one Jesus celebrated Passover with them. Now they return and know the command to “depart not” from Jerusalem.
Our study into Jesus’ Road to the Right Hand is coming to a conclusion. Jesus has ascended and we shall conclude by understanding the present reality of where Jesus is.
Now we see a key phrase that denotes the spirit and posture of the Disciples transitioning to become apostles who would be “sent” on the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. They would have to wait, but be in “one accord” that is one in waiting, one in knowing God was going to visit them in a different form. They had now known Jesus physically but in 10 days they would know Him spiritually through the Holy Spirit.
Before Jesus departed from them He breathed on them to receive the Holy Spirit. This experience was regeneration, whilst the one to come would be Sanctification and Commissioning. Its important to understand that there were 2 visitations of the Holy Spirit. Not the traditional focus on the day of Pentecost. Details are important because they had to learn in the waiting, what they were waiting for and how they would wait.
Would they wait having a theological debate? Or complain who was to buy food? No. They were knit in one spirit of agreement.
Is it not time in our day and generation that we also gain that accord? That unity? It precedes the greatest visitation of God in any generation.
A great new Pentecost is needed. The Disciples had no Bible yet, other than Old Testament knowledge. No modern technological advance. They had a simplistic understanding of what they had to do. It was imperative that they wait. When we see that the Day of Pentecost was the day God chose to pour out something that the prophet Joel saw prophetically, it was exact and the timings were kronos, exact and full of significance.
Acts 3:19-21 tells us that the Holy Spirit works according to Kairos when it comes to revivals and refreshings. They are kairos because they happen due to God’s people fulfilling certain conditions. The Upper Room was full of 120 people all in one accord and whilst Jesus sent the Spirit on a specific day in history, today Pentecost is not just a day but an experience. That can happen any time. With the world in war, famine and disease, we need a new Pentecost.
It takes us first being disciples so that we by the Spirit can be “apostles” that is being SENT. Many times we want to be sent without being disciples. A disciple sits at Jesus’s feet and serves. If we seek to be sent first our service is poor and our ministry self seeking.
May we receive the urgency to come into one accord and break down denominational divides so that the world once again understand the Saviour and Lord Jesus is today.
