Today, 36 years ago you left us. Does not seem like it. Seems to have flown. The cancer spread quickly, Mesothelioma, affected the lungs after sawing asbestos on the Daisy Farm Estate which we ended up living from 1970. Memories of you are numerous. One thing beyond hard working and coming from what seems to be a healthy family, a family built on wholesome memories, grandma and Grandad Durose. Well known in Eastwood area in Nottinghamshire. Laid to rest, his ashes, in Greasley Church graveyard. Miss him too.
36 years learning to live without you. 36 years which turned us from children to adults very suddenly.
Memories of the workshops you rented, going down to help you with the edge banding with the edge bander machine. The many fittings together. The laughs and the real craftsmanship of your trade.
The holidays in St. Ives which we enjoyed in 74 and 78. More memorable being in 78, hot summer, the Flats in Carbis Bay. The trip to Plymouth beforehand. The left over remnants of the Jubilee in 77. The island with a luminous crown 👑.
No doubt you put the interests of your family, your parents, ourselves, your sisters before yourself. The memories of having time with your sister and her family from Australia, in 75 and 78. There were other visits which I cannot remember.
Christmas…yes recently spoke of you in a Christmas message in a meeting in Morecambe this last Christmas, something i rarely do. There was a touch you had about making Christmas special, the Tree, the night before, opening generous gifts. You thought nothing but the happiness of others.
Today remembering you is sobering but also comforting because you are no longer suffering.
You are remembered because of the sacrifices you made by buying the 4 bedroom property which you determined to give your family a new start. A house which my brother now resides and I hope makes a go at doing some good renovations and making living space pleasant, as well as succeeding at business there.
Never forget you….dad.
