The Road to Emmaus- a spiritual journey part 10: When earthly ambitions become a heavenly pursuits.

The journey of the two disciples started in a place of consternation of Jerusalem, and ends with complete enlightenment in Emmaus. This is what we read in Luke 24. We are already through 10 aspects, and I am sure there is so much more. This series which will shortly be a physical publication will chart our own spiritual journey, from our own consternations, disappointments and loss of direction to a new focus, to a new light, to a new project, to a new way of life.

“We had hoped…” other than the grief felt, which we have already spoken, there is a sense of loss of purpose. Jesus spoke of a Kingdom, for which they pictured being an earthly domain, and not what Jesus had in mind. Nor the Father. Jesus spoke of a miraculous life, changes, so many indications that He was bringing them into a life that was so different than what they had lived before. Yet in the space of 12 hours this had become shattered and thwarted. The Cross of Golgotha had put a complete demolition of all their plans and ambitions. Even James and John with their mother envisaged them seated on thrones with Jesus. Such was the ambition overload.

Jesus had to lift their sights. And in Emmaus He sits with them and as He lifts the bread so their eyes, their minds, their spirits all realised, He is the Lord! So much that was earthly fell from them as they beheld Him truly. Their whole vision changed, that now He had conquered death, the limits of their perception of what He had returned to do changed. As they looked upward not only their sight of the bread went upward, their hearts leapt upward to the realms of eternity. Suddenly everything that Jesus said to them had a new vibration. Suddenly all that they heard in the Word suddenly made mental sense. They first had the burning sensation as He explained, now as He prays to bless, the whole Scripture made perfect sense.

Our Journey in the Scriptures must lead us to an encounter with Jesus. He must be renewed in our midst, taking the weights of our human ambitions, plans, emotions, and everything that can cloud our comprehending Him. Very often we stay with the Words, instead of meeting Him who is the Word itself. The Apostle John was in the Spirit on the Day of the Lord. The Day of the Lord is any day Jesus chooses to reveal new things to us about Himself, they are new to us, because we have not experienced them until now.

When we let go of earthly ambitions and embrace heavenly pursuits we begin to live in the same dimension as Jesus. This is the purpose of this journey, as we must begin to understand that our earthly ambitions have no bearing on eternity and can be an obstacle of eternity.

Let us approach Him at the Covenant Table, having heard His Word, and now comprehended Him and the mission He has for us!

Maranatha!
