As we continue this series, we need to understand this is a spiritual journey in which we get a revelation of Jesus in the most profound and fuller sense. The revelation of Jesus leads us to be “witnesses” and “beholders” of His Testimony which opens up a new realm in terms of being in the prophetic ministry in a new sense, not the predictive or limited understanding of prophecy which many have today. To behold Him in His Glory makes us partakers of the marturia, which is the witness Jesus gives of us to the Father.
As we have already discovered the Scriptures are the starting place for this revelation to be given, but there is something curious going on here, whilst the Scriptures are being opened their comprehension of His Person is being closed. There is many reasons for this. Mainly because Jesus Himself is in a transition, He is the Risen Lord, but not yet the Ascended or Glorified Lord. They could not yet comprehend this, and could not depend on this Risen Lord for the continuance of His Gospel ministry. The Gospel ministry was now complete in that now the work of Calvary was accomplished, and that it was to be preached in all nations, only when He is exalted and glorified. A new chapter is about to unfold here, and what is to be unfolded is for us to comprehend, we cannot simply define Jesus only by His earthly ministry, and apply it to everything we do and everything we are, we are to embrace realities that maybe are alien to us because of what the tradition of men does to us, conditions and limits us to be blind to glorious truths.
We have to have our comprehension temporarily limited or closed whilst a new perspective is explained. The eyes are closed because Jesus is now speaking to their hearts and their spirits. This is necessary because this same process has to be walked out on the days leading up to Pentecost when they will see the whole Jesus, His ascension and glorification birthed the Church. Without this exaltation, where He is given a Kingdom and Dominion as Daniel 7 explains, and Philippians 2 speaks, there would be no Church. The Church is birthed in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit because Jesus is finally in heaven, exalted and glorified UNTIL the kronos of restoring all things. There is a set time for Him being kept says Acts 3:19-21, and it tells us why He is there, to be interceding for the saints that we all come unto a the fulness of the stature of Him who is the all in all, says Ephesians 4. So whilst here the Disciples are being placed within the context of Moses, the Prophets and Psalms, if we are on this journey to our “Emmaus” then He would not be starting at Moses, nor prophets or Psalms, He would be opening up the Gospels, the Acts, the Epistles and Revelation, because all these contain the full revelation of Jesus Christ.
The difference in these is simple, the disciples who were in grief and dismay needed to know how Calvary fits into prophetic scripture, we are not in that place, we are needing the revelation of a Jesus who is now invisible, but at the Right Hand. So at several spiritual seasons in our lives, it would seem we are not seeing with our senses, and we need to have something happen to us that will elevate our vision to comprehend where Jesus is taking us in this Church walk. The natural senses are closed off whilst our spiritual senses are completely activated, and no more are we comprehending from a human perspective, but from a spiritual one. This probably sums up this spiritual exercise we are on now.
More than ever in Church circles, we are looking for the happenings with our physical eyes, yet Jesus wants us alerted to the happenings in the heavenlies. Stephen before dying looked up seeing Jesus at the right hand, and all the angels. Yet the Jews irritated with the admonitions of Stephen, more determined to kill him, because they were so fixed on their own limits of their comprehension conditioned by the perpetuation of the Law and its trappings.
So may we submit to this process, whilst our natural capacities are found wanting, may we be interacted on a heart and spirit level, so that we may comprehend Him more fully, and by comprehending Him more fully we come into what being Church really is, full of the Spirit and fire!
